Trusting Your Baby (And Your Instincts) When Introducing Allergens
Apr 10, 2026
Introducing allergens can feel like a lot.
There are timelines, recommendations, and a sense that you need to get it right at a certain age.
And while those guidelines can be helpful, they can also make this stage feel rushed.
Because when you’re in it, with your baby in front of you, it’s not always that straightforward.
Every baby responds differently
Some babies move through new foods easily.
Others take a bit more time.
And this is where things can start to feel confusing, because most advice doesn’t leave much room for that variation.
But in reality, your baby is not following a checklist.
They’re responding to what you’re offering in real time.
The role of digestion
One piece that often gets overlooked in this conversation is digestion.
Your baby’s gut is still developing, especially in the early stages of solids.
It’s learning how to break down new foods, how to handle different proteins, and how to tolerate what’s being introduced.
And this plays a role in how your baby responds to allergens.
It’s not just about exposure. It’s also about how ready their system is to handle that exposure.
What to pay attention to
This is where observation becomes really helpful.
Instead of focusing only on whether a food has been introduced by a certain age, you can start looking at:
- how your baby digests the foods they’re already eating
- how they respond after meals
- whether things feel smooth or a bit unsettled
These small details give you a lot of information.
They help you decide whether to move forward, slow down, or adjust.
Taking a more flexible approach
This doesn’t mean avoiding allergens or delaying them unnecessarily.
It just means approaching this stage with a bit more flexibility.
Introducing foods in a way that takes your baby’s readiness into account can make the whole process feel more manageable.
You’re not trying to keep up with a timeline.
You’re working with what’s happening in front of you.
If you want guidance with this
This is something I guide parents through inside The Confident Feeder.

Inside, I walk you through how to:
- introduce new foods based on your baby’s readiness
- approach allergens without feeling rushed
- recognise early signs of sensitivities
- and make decisions that actually make sense for your baby
So instead of second-guessing every step, you have a way to move forward that feels more steady.
When it comes to allergens, there isn’t one perfect timeline that fits every baby.
What tends to work better is paying attention to your baby, noticing how they respond, and adjusting as you go.
That’s often where things start to feel a lot clearer.
