Why Every Bite is Important When Starting Solids
Jul 02, 2026
One thing I never want parents to feel is afraid of food.
Starting solids shouldn't be about avoiding everything that could go wrong or worrying that one wrong choice will harm your baby.
But I do believe we owe our babies the very best nutrition we can provide.
Because when you look at what's happening around six months of age, it's easy to understand why those first foods matter so much.
Your Baby Is Growing Faster Than Ever
The first year of life is a period of extraordinary growth.
Your baby's brain is developing at an incredible pace.
Their nervous system is maturing.
Their immune system is learning.
Their gut is still developing.
And while all of this is happening, they're only eating tiny amounts of food.
That's why I always come back to one simple thought:
If every bite is precious, shouldn't every bite be as nourishing as possible?
Not All First Foods Offer the Same Nutrition
Many of the foods commonly recommended as first foods are easy to prepare and widely accepted.
But they're not always the foods that provide the nutrients babies need most during this stage of life.
Around six months, babies have an especially high need for nutrients like iron, zinc, healthy fats, choline, and vitamin D.
These nutrients play an important role in brain development, growth, and overall health.
That's why I prefer to begin with nutrient-dense, traditional foods that have nourished babies for generations.
Foods like egg yolks, meat stock, slow-cooked meats, liver, and other whole foods provide concentrated nutrition that supports a growing baby in ways many processed first foods simply can't.
The Hardest Part Isn't Feeding—It's Knowing What to Do
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by starting solids, you're certainly not alone.
One moment you're wondering what food to offer first.
The next you're worrying about choking.
Then constipation.
Then food reactions.
Then allergens.
Then whether you should be doing baby-led weaning or spoon-feeding.
Before long, it can feel like every meal comes with another question.
After working with thousands of families, I've realised that most parents don't need more opinions.
They need clear, practical guidance that helps everything make sense.
A Simpler Way to Start Solids
I wanted to create the resource I wish every parent had when starting solids—something simple, practical, and easy to follow.
Inside, you'll learn which foods to introduce first, how to prepare them, how to support your baby's gut and nutritional needs, and what to do when challenges like constipation, food reactions, or allergens come up.
Rather than leaving you to piece together advice from social media and conflicting recommendations, The Baby Meal Map gives you a clear path forward.
When you understand what your baby needs and why it matters, you can enjoy this stage with more, knowing you're giving your little one the strongest possible foundation from their very first bites.
